Fed: AFP chief says Ryan issue highlights need for independence

The head of the Australian Federal Police says the departure of New South Wales policecommissioner PETER RYAN has raised an important issue about the independence of policecommissioners.

The NSW government has been dogged by questions about whether Mr RYAN quit or was pushedout of his job two years early.

Mr RYAN is understood to have had a fractured relationship with NSW police ministerMICHAEL COSTA.

AFP commissioner MICK KELTY has told ABC radio the departure highlights the issue ofthe relationship between ministers and commissioners.

While not commenting on the relationship between Mr RYAN and Mr COSTA, Mr KELTY's saidthat police commissioners need independence.

He says police need to be able to serve the community which has given them their legitimaterole -- as well as the government of the day.

Mt KELTY says that's always a difficult balance.
