Fed: Howard says shocked and saddened to hear of Nugent s death

CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard today said he was shocked and saddened
to learn of the death of Liberal backbencher Peter Nugent.

Mr Howard said he had spoken to Mr Nugent's wife Carol and expressed his sorrow on
behalf of his Liberal Party colleagues.

"We are all quite upset," he told journalists.

"He was only 62 and it happened very suddenly ... it is a very sad day for the Liberal Party."

Mr Howard said Mr Nugent, who died of a heart attack at his Melbourne home early this
morning, was a fine colleague and good friend.

"He had a particular interest in foreign policy issues and matters affecting disadvantaged
and minority groups," Mr Howard said.

"He will be very greatly missed."
